Linear layouts arrange processes sequentially in a straight line, making them suitable for single-model production or high-volume manufacturing with limited product variety. U-shaped layouts arrange the pretreatment and electro-deposition stages in a U-shape, suiting medium-sized vehicle plants. Double-U or loop layouts utilize a double-U or rectangular loop configuration for pretreatment and electro-deposition while allowing independent placement of the spraying section, making them ideal for large, modern vehicle plants. Modular layouts divide processes into independent modules arranged by functional zones, supporting flexible production. Multi-level vertical layouts utilize vertical space to distribute different processes across various floors, thereby minimizing the facility's footprint.
Selecting a layout requires a comprehensive evaluation based on five key principles: production capacity planning, model flexibility, factory conditions, investment budget, and future scalability.
With industrial advancement, modern painting line layouts are trending toward intelligent integration and green, energy-efficient design. Intelligent integration is evidenced by the use of digital twin technology for layout simulation and the implementation of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for end-to-end process monitoring and scheduling. Green, energy-efficient design features include recovering waste heat from curing ovens to heat pretreatment baths and positioning exhaust treatment units close to curing ovens to reduce energy loss in ductwork.
